1898-1911
During the reign of Emperor Guangxu (1871-1908) of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Zhang Zhidong, the then-governor of Hunan and Hubei provinces, established the Hubei Farming School.
In 1903, it expanded into the Hubei Higher Agricultural School.
In 1911, the Xinhai Revolution broke out, which sought to overthrow the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), and the era for running a school by the Qing government ended.
1912-1951
In 1912, Hubei Farming School was transformed into Hubei Class A Agricultural School after the 1911 Xinhai Revolution. Subsequently, it underwent various transformations: It became the Hubei First and Second Advanced Agricultural Schools in 1923, the Hubei Provincial Rural Normal College in 1930, the Hubei Provincial Education College in 1931, the Hubei Provincial Agricultural Technology College in 1937, the Hubei Provincial Agricultural College in 1940 and the Hubei Agricultural College in 1950.
The school relocated in 1938 to Wufeng Mountain in Enshi Tujia and Miao autonomous prefecture, Hubei province.
In 1945, after the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45), the school moved back to Wuchang Baoji Nunnery.
In 1949, Wuhan was liberated, opening a new chapter in the school’s history.
1952-1984
In 1952, the Huazhong Agricultural College was established, merging the following institutions: Agricultural College of Wuhan University, Hubei Agricultural College, and some departments of Sun Yat-sen University, Nanchang University, Henan University, Guangxi University, Hunan Agricultural College and Jiangxi Agricultural College.
The school relocated to Mount Shizi, Nanhu Lake in Wuchang, in 1957.
In the 1960s, international students were recruited for the first time.
1985-2004
In 1985, the school was renamed Huazhong Agricultural University.
With more than 20 years of development, the school has covered disciplines including agronomy, science, engineering, literature, law, economics, management and other fields.
2005-Present
In 2005, the school was designated a national "211 Project" university. That same year, it earned the title of "National Advanced Unit of Spiritual Civilization Construction" from the Spiritual Civilization Development Steering Commission of the CPC Central Committee. In 2006, the Ministry of Education recognized the school's excellence in undergraduate teaching level evaluation.
