The College of Animal Sciences & Technology/College of Veterinary Medicine is among HZAU's oldest departments. It originated from Hubei Agricultural School founded by Zhang Zhidong in 1898. The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department was established at Huazhong Agricultural College in 1952, led by Professor Qin Lirang. In 1995, the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine was established at the university, and it was renamed the current title in 2002.
It encompasses nine departments: Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition and Feed Science, Animal Reproduction and Special Economic Animals, Intelligent Breeding, Basic Veterinary Medicine, Preventive Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Drug Science, and Public Health. With a faculty of 213 members, including 86 professors and 79 associate professors, the college has won national awards and seen multiple innovative research groups. One of its faculty members is a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
In recent years, its programs in Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine have ranked among the top universities in China, consistently rated A+ in evaluations and recognized as "Double First-Class" disciplines in 2017 and 2021.
