The College of Plant Science & Technology originated from the Hubei Agricultural School, founded in 1898 by Zhang Zhidong, governor of Hubei and Hunan provinces in the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). In 1952, it was transformed into the Department of Agriculture at Huazhong Agricultural College. The department had three majors: Agriculture, Plant Protection and Soil Chemistry. In 1954 they grew into three departments.
The Department of Agriculture and the Department of Plant Protection merged in July 2002 to form the College of Plant Sciences & Technology.
The college boasts a high-level faculty team, with 183 full-time teachers. Of them, there is one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries, 101 professors and researchers, 75 associate professors and associate researchers, and 107 doctoral supervisors.
