In response to the global shift towards medical sciences and the historical opportunity presented by the Healthy China Initiative, HZAU established the Biomedical Center in December 2016 and subsequently the College of Biomedicine & Health in May 2019.
Zhang Qifa, a professor and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the American National Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries, serves as the director of the Academic Committee, while Wei Shaozhong, a professor and director of Hubei Cancer Hospital, is the dean.
Leveraging HZAU's "double first-class" disciplines in biology and veterinary medicine, the college has established three key development areas: "genomics, precision nutrition, and preventive medicine". It focuses on three major research directions — nutrition and health, oncology, and neurobiology — to address the challenges posed by an aging population and the high incidence of major chronic and infectious diseases through innovation.
The college currently has 30 full-time faculty members, including 22 professors. Among them, six have received national-level talent awards, and 12 have received provincial or ministerial-level talent awards. Seventy-two percent of faculty members are under 40 years old, and 90 percent have international backgrounds. Additionally, 11 part-time teachers are employed from partner hospitals and renowned companies.
The faculty leads 37 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key R&D Program, with a total funding of over 30 million Yuan. They have published over 40 research papers in leading international journals such as Nature Genetics, Molecular Cell, Neuron, Science Advances, and Genome Biology, and their work has garnered widespread attention from the international scientific community.
The university's disciplines in biology and biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, pharmacology and toxicology, and clinical medicine are ranked in the top 1 percent globally according to ESI. The college offers doctoral programs in neurobiology, oncology, and immunobiology, as well as professional doctoral programs in biomedicine and pharmaceuticals, with 220 graduate students currently enrolled.
