The predecessor of the College of Informatics was the Computer Teaching and Research Section established in the former Basic Course Department in the mid-1980s. In April 2014, the College of Informatics was formed in order to further optimize the structure of disciplines and majors and promote the development of information disciplines.
It currently has 156 faculty members, including 137 full-time teachers (22 professors, 84 associate professors, and 31 lecturers). The college has been selected into national, provincial and ministerial level talent projects many times.
It has six departments: the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Bioinformatics, the Department of Big Data Science, the Department of Artificial Intelligence, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and the Public Computer Teaching Department.
It also has the Key Laboratory of Smart Breeding Technology, Ministry of Agriculture, the Agricultural Intelligent Technology Engineering Research Center, Ministry of Education, the Hubei Agricultural Bioinformatcis Key Laboratory, the Hubei Agricultural Big Data Engineering Technology Research Center and the Hubei Information Technology Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.
It has second-level doctoral and master's programs in Bioinformatics and Agricultural Information Engineering, doctoral and master's programs in Electronic Information, first-level master's programs in Computer Science and Technology and Mathematics, and master's degree programs in Applied Statistics. It also offers five undergraduate majors including Information Science and Technology, Bioinformatics, Data Science and Big Data Technology, Artificial Intelligence, and Information and Computing Science, which strongly support the school’s four “double first-class” disciplines including Biology, Animal Husbandry, Veterinary Medicine, and Horticulture.
