Kommaly Onxayvieng, director of the Aquaculture Office of the Livestock and Fisheries Department at the Lao Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and a Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) alumnus, visited HZAU on Nov 4.
Zeng Hongxia, director of HZAU's Department of International Cooperation and Exchanges, extended a warm welcome to Onxayvieng. She stressed the importance of higher education cooperation in agriculture between China and Laos and more students from Laos are welcome to study in China.
In view of the needs raised by the Lao side in the discussion, Li Dapeng, executive vice-dean of the Undergraduate School, suggested that experts of the university go to Laos to conduct field visits of the local aquaculture industry, provide professional suggestions for the development of the aquaculture industry there and jointly apply for international scientific and technological cooperation projects.
Xu Yansheng, deputy director of the HZAU Academy of Science and Technology Development, shared the opinion on further deepening the scientific and technological cooperation in the field of agriculture between the two countries.
Gao Jian, vice-dean of the College of Fisheries, said that developing the aquaculture industry in Laos is of great significance to promoting the Belt and Road Initiative, and that the College of Fisheries is looking forward to engaging in more cooperation and service projects in Laos to deepen cooperation between the two sides.

Onxayvieng thanked HZAU for its warm reception and expressed Laos' intention to introduce advanced technology, attract professionals and explore cooperative education, hoping to effectively promote the development of aquaculture industry in Laos through substantive bilateral cooperation. She stressed the importance of talent cultivation and educational cooperation, and put forward the idea of training more aquatic professionals through cooperative education.
Kommaly Onxayvieng studied aquaculture at the HZAU Aquaculture College from Sept 2013 to December 2021 and obtained a master's and a doctorate degree in aquaculture there.
