In July, a student team from the College of Humanities & Social Sciences at Huazhong Agricultural University carried out a social practice program at the Baoguokang Elderly Care Center in Hanzhong, Shaanxi province, exploring the integration of culture and eldercare.
Focusing on daily care, professional support, and emotional companionship, the team offered various services. They assisted caregivers with tasks such as changing bed sheets, trimming nails, and accompanying seniors in recreational activities—especially those with cognitive or mobility challenges—showing attentive care through every detail.
Drawing on their backgrounds in law and social work, students designed legal awareness sessions using China's Civil Code and gave anti-fraud lectures. They also provided one-on-one guidance on smartphone use, helping bridge the digital divide.
The students also served as active listeners, documenting personal stories shared by the elderly during intimate conversations.
The team also co-hosted a birthday party for seniors born in July, singing classics and gifting handmade tote bags. Senior citizen Xu Shangbin, playing harmonica accompaniment, said joyfully, "I used to play this tune in my youth."
On the final day, university faculty participated in a field visit and exchanged ideas with the center on how to enhance cooperation. The students vowed to continue contributing their youthful energy to improve elder services.
