Professor Klaus Osterrieder, president of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, led a delegation to Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) from March 1 to 4. HZAU Party secretary Yao Jianglin, relevant department heads, and Chinese Academy of Engineering academician Chen Huanchun attended the meetings.
Yao outlined HZAU's achievements in veterinary science. Osterrieder proposed expanding cooperation in education and research. He suggested multi-level training in equine, small animal, and exotic pet medicine, along with healthy livestock breeding, and joint research on infectious diseases and zoonoses to develop top veterinarians.
Directors of international exchange departments from both universities discussed their operations. Chen evaluated complementary strengths in animal genetics and breeding between China and Germany, and recommended deeper cooperation for mutual benefits.
An academic exchange was held on March 3 to better support future scientific research and academic resource sharing. Experts discussed emerging animal disease monitoring, cross-species transmission mechanisms, and vaccine development.
The delegation also visited HZAU's veterinary teaching hospital, Metaverse classroom, and Wuhan Keqian Biology Co Ltd's research center. They commended the university's clinical teaching, digital education application, and work in major animal disease prevention. This visit strengthened HZAU's international partnerships, advancing global veterinary education and contributing to public health.
