A delegation of students and faculty from the Joint Institute of Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) and Lincoln University undertook a 15-day study tour at Lincoln University in New Zealand from Feb 21 to March 7. The tour focused on exploring sustainable agriculture and learning through academic exchanges, field research, and cultural activities.
At the welcome ceremony on Feb 23, Lincoln University President Grant Edwards introduced the university's academic programs and research priorities. The delegation toured the campus, where teaching facilities are integrated with farmland, providing a practical learning environment.
During the visit, students attended classes on topics such as ecology, food science, and viticulture, and experienced the interactive teaching methods commonly used in New Zealand universities. Lectures and discussions on regenerative agriculture expanded students' understanding of the significance of soil health and biodiversity in modern farming.
The delegation also engaged in field visits within the agricultural sector. In the wine industry, students learned about the production process from grape cultivation to winemaking. At the Ashley Dene farm and Lincoln University Dairy Farm, they observed how rotational grazing supports both animal welfare and product quality. They conducted soil profile studies at Hoonhay Valley and attended a workshop on Education for Sustainable Development.
Beyond academics, the group visited the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, the Chinese Consulate General in Christchurch, and the Rewi Alley Memorial Museum, enhancing their cross-cultural experience.
The program concluded on March 6 with a closing ceremony, underscoring the ongoing cooperation between the two universities in developing global agricultural talent.
