The results of the first Hubei Provincial University Laboratory Safety Skills Competition were recently announced, with teams from Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) winning awards.
The competition was held at Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST) on May 28, with 58 teams and 174 teachers from 35 universities competing, including from Wuhan University and HUST.
The event featured two categories: laboratories that use chemical substances and those that do not. HZAU entered one team in each category. The team in the non-chemical laboratory category won first prize and ranked third overall, while the other team won third prize and ranked 10th overall.
HZAU selected six laboratory safety managers from several departments and colleges, including the College of Chemistry, the College of Animal Science and Technology, and the College of Resources and Environment, to participate.
It also organized special training and simulation exercises covering hazardous chemical management, laboratory risk inspection, problem correction, safety signs, and waste disposal.
The competition combined theoretical tests with practical tasks, aiming to improve participants' ability to identify risks, assess safety issues, and inspect potential hazards.
Zhang Yue, head of the Office of Campus Construction and Security, said laboratory safety is an important part of campus safety. He said HZAU will continue to strengthen its laboratory safety team and improve its risk-prevention capabilities.
