Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) and China Union Engineering (CUE), a Chinese environmental technology company, have jointly established a termite research institute.
The two sides signed a cooperation agreement on Aug 4, with the institute set to conduct research on environmentally friendly termite control, the higher-value use of termite resources, and related technology.
HZAU researchers have already made progress in developing new green termite baits and exploring the use of live termites and termite-associated fungi. The institute will also study how termites, plants and microorganisms interact during cellulose degradation, with the aim of improving the use of agricultural residues such as straw.
The new institute is intended to bridge fundamental research, technological development and industrial application. HZAU will support interdisciplinary research teams, while CUE will provide resources for technological development and commercialization.
During the ceremony, CUE also donated 1.2 million yuan ($178,000) to support the university's educational development.
HZAU President Yan Jianbing said the institute should focus on real industrial needs and continue to conduct basic research, particularly on the mechanisms that allow termites to break down cellulose efficiently.
