A new potato variety exhibition and taste evaluation event was held in Wuchuan county, Inner Mongolia autonomous region on Sept 22. Among the varieties showcased, 15 varieties bred by the potato research team from Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU) were recognized for their outstanding quality.
The event, held in conjunction with the 7th Chinese Farmers' Harvest Festival, featured 46 new potato varieties, including those for fresh consumption, processing, specialty uses, and multi-purpose applications.
The evaluation focused on the quality of steamed potatoes, with experts and scholars assessing the aroma, texture, taste, and overall quality of the varieties. Members of the public also provided their feedback on the flavor.
Huashu 16, developed by HZAU, is China's first early-maturing, small-tuber potato variety.
With a growth period of approximately 70 days, this variety features an upright plant structure, moderate growth, and short stolons. Each plant produces between 15 and 25 tubers, with an average tuber weight of 48.7 grams.
It mainly produces small, yellow and round tubers, with smooth skin and a flavorful taste. The yield is approximately 2,500 kilograms per acre.
In recent years, the HZAU potato research team has promoted Huashu 16 through various demonstration projects. These initiatives have delivered both economic and social benefits, further demonstrating the potential of green and sustainable agricultural practices.
