The three-day 2025 Summer School on Methodology of Computational Social Science concluded on July 25 at Huazhong Agricultural University. The event brought together over 130 young faculty members and students from more than 90 domestic and international institutions, including renowned universities like the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the University of Bristol, Tsinghua University, and Peking University.
During the opening ceremony, Koen van Dam of Imperial College London expressed his delight at the strong turnout, noting that his annual visit to Wuhan to deliver a lecture on social simulation has become a tradition. He encouraged participants to think critically, ask questions, and actively share their ideas.
The summer school featured a series of engaging lectures. Koen van Dam demonstrated the diverse applications of social simulation in public health and ecological governance using NetLogo tool.
Sun Zhanli guided participants through the "Game of Life" to explore the setting and evolution of subject behavior rules.
Additionally, Xiong Hang provided a detailed breakdown of the simulation model process and showcased his team's proprietary "decision simulator" and "public policy evaluation platform", which sparked significant interest among the attendees.
In the final stage of the program, participants formed 15 groups to present their modeling results on topics such as the impact of peer effects and teacher intervention, the economic effects of extreme climate, and risks in the stock market. The presentations, conducted entirely in English, showcased the students' impressive analytical skills. Five groups were ultimately recognized with the excellent modeling award for their outstanding work.
